Editor's Corner:

-12/12/01:  13 months.  A new webhost.  A new SPOA?  Perhaps.  I could describe the last year, the various cons, whatever goings on have kept this fine collection of individuals from you.  Frankly, I don't much see the point.  You're here now, we're here now.  We will begin again.  Is this vague?  You're damn right it is.  I have no idea where this is going.  Wait, I do.  Its going into a promise.  That is:

1)SPOA will continue to provide the single otaku's viewpoint.
2)SPOA will continue to be intolerant of horrid anime.
3)SPOA will continue to refuse to give a damn what its detractors think.

There, that seems a decent creed.  Keep watching.

Your semi faithful webmaster,

D.

Notes from the Host:

11/1/00: Greetings; it's once again Dave, your gracious webhost. Another three months, another update... We apologize to our loyal fans, but real life has its demands, and we're not making any cash off of this site. Our jobs (and, in my case, classes) must necessarily take some priority. In any case, consider this a hopeful sign of things to come.

This past weekend was NekoCon, one of our habitual stopping points. I'll leave it to George's forthcoming review to express our detailed feelings of the Con, but suffice to say, we relaxed and had a generally enjoyable time of it... also, we discussed amongst ourselves the changing face of the anime industry and fansubbing community and our possible place within it. Yes, we SPOA may yet do something concrete to enrich you, our Otaku brethren, besides just yelling at the DragonBallZ fans and providing a forum for Ris. Elaboration on this point will come soon. Suffice to say, it will involve us doing what Computer Science Majors do best.

Speaking of Ris, he's been occupied in relocating himself. Soon, hopefully, the rants will flow again. Rest assured that when they do, they'll appear promptly within our pages.

Thank you, that's all. Return to your lives enriched by our wisdom.

Your gracious webhost,

FatherDog

-8/13/00: Its been months, hasn't it?  Months looking for an excuse to write.  Back from Otakon 2000 seems worthwhile enough.  Not that I intend to speak about the con.  Not here, at any rate.  Instead, let me address and issue far more important to this community.  That, dear readers, is the incredible lack of Harlock-based material on the shelves and in the fansub catalogs.  My god people, do you know what we're missing??  The stories of a great individualist, fighting to save our planet and a race long gone too decadent and passive to care for itself.  What nobility!  What strength!  What great musical interludes as our hero places himself at such risk, all for our benefit!
::ahem:: Point being, our access to our anime heritage is greatly lacking.  My own obsession with Harlock and his universe aside, how many of us have seen those anime that are the foundations of those genres we know and love?  Neglect not your responsibility to hunt out your roots.  With the release of Gundam in this country the three Gundam movies are accessible.  I suggest you start there.  Press your favorite fansubber to put aside their translations of this month's substandard shoujo and delve into a few classic 70's and 80's pieces.  Works that will likely never reach this country if their are not fan produced.  Works that stand the test of time, not just the whims of a pre-pubescent market.  Myself, I intend to bring back a box set of Galaxy Express 999 come my next trip to Japan.  I'll translate the damn thing myself if I have to.

Your semi faithful webmaster,
D.
